Romania has 9 retirees for each 10 employees

The number of retirees in Romania was close to 5.23 million in the fourth quarter of 2017, up by about 5,000 compared to the previous quarter.

The ratio between retirees and employees in the country was 9 to 10, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).

There are high disparities between the country’s regions in this sense. For example, Teleorman county, one of the poorest in Romania, had 17 retirees for each 10 employees while in the capital Bucharest there were only 5 retirees to 10 employees.

There were high discrepancies in terms of average pensions as well. In Botosani county, North-Eastern Romania, the average pension was RON 860 (EUR 188) while in Bucharest the average pension was RON 1.362 (EUR 298). The average pension in Romania was RON 1.132 (EUR 248).
