Romania ranks among lowest in Europe for number of cows

Romania only has 14.8 cows per 100 hectares of agricultural land, one the lowest cow herd population densities in Europe, based on this indicator. Romania only outranked Hungary and Bulgaria, while the Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland are at the other end of the spectrum, with 15 times more cows than Romania.

Romania has lost 1.9 million cows in the last 20 years, and those affected were mainly small, local producers.

The Netherlands, which has 4 million hectares of ploughable land – half Romania’s – has a EUR 25 billion agricultural production in 2011, a third more than Romania’s, according to data from Eurostat. One million people work in agriculture in the Netherlands, less than half the number in Romania.
