Romania plans to build a new nuclear waste storage in Saligny, near the nuclear power plant at Cernavoda, which will require an initial investment of EUR 40 million, according to Florin Tatar, president of the National Agency for Radioactive Waste (ANDR).

‘This deposit will be made for sure. We are ready to make eight storage modules in the beginning, with an investment of EUR 40 million, and, in time, the plan is to expand the deposit on 40 hectares, and then the investment will amount to a total of EUR 400 million,” said Tatar, quoted by local Dailybusiness.ro.

The money will mainly come from the EUR 2 fee per MWh paid by Nuclearelectrica in a special fund intended for the storage of radioactive waste, but private investors are being sort for this project.

The radioactive fuel is currently stored at Baita Bihor, where the only deposit of this type in the country is located.
