Romania-Pakistan duo wins doubles tennis title in Barcelona

Romanian tennis player Florin Mergea and Pakistani Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi won their first ATP World Tour doubles title as a team on Sunday, at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

The Mergea/Qureshi duo won the final match against German/Austrian pairing of Philipp Petzschner and Alexander Peya 6-4, 6-3.

In the semifinals, Florin Mergea and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi beat the Romanian- Dutch team made of Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-3, 5-7, 14-12. They also knocked off top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the quarterfinals.

Barcelona is only the fourth ATP World Tour tournament Mergea and Qureshi have played together. Their previous best result was the semifinals at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech two weeks ago, according to a statement from ATP World Tour.

Florin Mergea and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi will receive 500 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points and split EUR 150,780 in prize money.
