Romania sees 130 new measles cases in one week

Romanian doctors diagnosed about 130 new measles cases in the last week, according to the National Center for Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases (CNSCBT).

No deaths were recorded during this period.

The measles outbreak began last fall in Romania. Over 9,200 measles cases have been registered until Friday, September 15, and 34 people died during these months. The biggest number of measles cases occurred in the 0 to 9 age group.

Nine of the deaths occurred in Timis county whereas seven of them were in Dolj county. The disease has spread to 41 counties. Tulcea is the only county in Romania where no measles case has been yet recorded.

Measles is an infectious disease that often leads to complications. One in four people who have measlesneeds hospitalization. The disease is deadly for 1 out of 1,000 measles patients.
