Romania, first in EU for European fund investigations

Romania ranked first among the EU countries where the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) completed most investigations related to European funds last year, namely 21. Eleven of them also received recommendations.

The country also ranked first in the EU for the number of indictments made on OLAF's recommendation, as well as for the number of cases in which the judicial authorities rejected the case.

Some 33 complaints came from private sources and two from public sources for the reported frauds in 2016.

Romania is followed by Poland, with 16 inquiries, eight of which have been completed with recommendations, and Hungary, with 11 investigations, all concluded with recommendations, according to OLAF's 2016 report.

The report also details cases of irregularity or fraud in each EU member state in the field of customs and agricultural duties. In Romania, the authorities reported 305 cases of frauds and irregularities affecting the collection of customs duties between 2013-2016.
