Romanian prosecutors freeze properties worth EUR 8.8 mln in high-profile embezzlement case

The Romanian prosecutors have frozen 16 real estate assets worth RON 41 million (EUR 8.8 million) belonging to Carmen Palade, the former general manager of the Unirea Shopping Center (opening picture) in Bucharest, local Mediafax reported.

Carmen Palade, the ex-wife of late Romanian billionaire Dan Adamescu, is being prosecuted for embezzling close to RON 48 million (EUR 10.3 million) from the company she managed, which was controlled by her husband and is now owned by his son, Alexander Adamescu.

The frozen assets include the Rex hotel in Mamaia, several apartments, a land plot and a villa on the Lascar Catargiu Boulevard in Bucharest.

Carmen Palade is now being investigated under house arrest.
