Romanian president: Central bank’s independence is essential

26 April 2018

Romania’s National Bank (BNR) must remain independent, which is essential to its monetary policy decisions, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said after a meeting with BNR governor Mugur Isarescu on Wednesday, April 25.

The president offered to mediate between the BNR and the Government. Iohannis will have a similar meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila this Friday.

During his talk with the BNR head, the president emphasized price stability as a target for the central bank. The BNR governor however showed that a significant influence on prices is outside BNR’s control and monetary policies.

Both the Government and the central bank should avoid competitive approaches and work efficiently in coordinating economic policies, concluded the Romanian president.
