Lonely ruined Romanian monastery wins this year's Wikipedia photo contest

15 December 2011

A picture taken by a Romanian photographer of the Chiajna monastery, in Romanian capital Bucharest's outskirts, has won the Wikipedia photo contest for this year. Mihai Petre's picture was up against 159,999 other photos that were contributed by over 5,000 users.

Of these 160,000 photos 169 finalists were selected by the European jury in the Wiki Loves Monuments Competition. “This photo of a monastery in the snow in Bucharest is an outstanding composition, fully reflecting the mysterious character of this ruin. The color-balance, environment and the man in the middle of nowhere make the monument larger and give it a 'wow' effect. All together the ruin seems to come alive by the combination of these elements,” wrote the jury about the winning picture.

The jury selected the 11 runners- up and one winner. The top 13 photos will be bundled in a calendar.
