Payroll law draft enters Romanian Chamber of Deputies’ special committees

29 May 2017

The payroll law draft, which will increase the salaries of several categories of employees in the public sector, enters the Chamber of Deputies’ special committees for debate today, May 29.

The labor committee will provide a report on the draft law, whereas the budget and the legal committees will be consulted. The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making forum.

The bill has stirred negative comments from the opposition and protests among public employees. The National Union Confederation “Cartel Alfa” announced a protest in front of the Parliament building on Tuesday, May 30. The union members will demand the Chamber of Deputies’ labor committee to adopt and back the amendments proposed by trade union organizations. Similar protests took place last week.

Romania’s Senate approved last week the payroll draft law with 85 favorable votes, 10 negative votes and 12 abstentions. Labor minister Olguta Vasilescu said that the new payroll law’s impact on the state budget could amount to RON 43 billion (EUR 9.4 billion) until 2022.
