Nutritionists could decide what inmates eat in Romania

08 September 2017

Romania’s Justice Ministry will change the food norm for inmates, in collaboration with nutritionists, according to a draft project the Government adopted yesterday, reports News.ro.

The bill amends the criteria for the inmates’ food norm.

The current criteria only have a reference to the caloric value. The draft project introduces new criteria, such as the quantity and quality of food, as requested by the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and the standards established by the European Penitentiary Rules.

Moreover, people who have a final sentence and those who are in pre-trial detention will receive food of equal caloric value, according to the new bill. The difference of treatment between the two categories is not justified.

The Government will send the draft project to the Parliament.
