A World War II projectile exploded at a logging site in Eastern Romania on Monday, May 28, killing one young man and severely injuring two others.

According to the investigators’ first information, one of the men hit the projectile with a hammer causing the blast.

A pyrotechnics team went to the site to investigate what type of projectile exploded and if the blast was accidental or not. Two witnesses said the three men were trying to cut the projectile.

It’s quite often that construction or agriculture workers find World War II ammunition in Romania during digging operations but this is for the first time in many years when such a projectile explodes and kills someone. At the end of April, six unexploded bombs from World War II were found near Focsani, also in Eastern Romania, each weighing about 500 kilograms.
