Romania’s Chamber of Deputies VP: Justice minister will also be evaluated

25 October 2018

Florin Iordache, a former justice minister and current vice president of the Chamber of Deputies, said that justice minister Tudorel Toader will be evaluated just as general prosecutor Augustin Lazăr was.

Yesterday, October 24, Toader announced he started the procedure for revoking the country’s general prosecutor following an evaluation of his activity.

“Just as in the case of Mr. Lazăr, without a doubt, Mr. Toader will also be evaluated. Who is evaluating Mr. Toader? The prime minister,” Iordache said in a TV show, quoted by News.ro.

Toader would be evaluated alongside other ministers as a government reshuffling prepared by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is expected soon.

Iordache, the president of the Parliament’s special committee for changing the justice laws, said that Toader should have been “more pro-active” in what the justice laws and criminal codes were concerned. He said that if he had been the justice minister, he would have implemented the decisions of the Constitutional Court “through ordinance, without an ordinance, with people on the streets, with people at home.”

Iordache was a justice minister at the time the controversial emergency ordinance OUG 13 was adopted, leading to massive street protests in February 2017. The ordinance, now revoked, redefined the abuse of power and conflict of interest charges, partially decriminalizing them.
