We are ready for any scenario, RO President says on Russia-Ukraine tensions

27 November 2018

The country is ready for any scenario, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said on the recent tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

“We obviously follow very, very closely the developments in Ukraine, and of course, in the area of the Kerch strait, where the incident took place. We are ready for any scenario, any measure, but, as our allies in NATO and our friends in the European Union have said, and we are of the same opinion, we have asked the parties involved to treat the incident with calm, to move towards deactivating tensions; in this way, things can go back to normal much easier,” the president said.

Iohannis added that Romanians do not have any reasons to be concerned.

“At this point we continue to follow the developments and we will be ready to react accordingly. But I can say that Romanians have no reasons to be concerned,” he said.

President Iohannis is currently in France to attend the opening of the France – Romania season. He is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.

On November 25, Russia stopped three Ukrainian navy vessels from entering the Sea of Azov via the Kerch Strait. A Russian cargo ship blocked the access of the Ukrainian vessels. Later, Russian forces opened fire at and seized the Ukrainian vessels. Ukraine said six crew members were injured.
