Romania’s Transilvania International Film Festival unveils competition lineup

14 July 2020

Twelve productions were selected in the official competition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), the largest film festival in Romania.

The movies competing for the Transilvania Trophy are daring and diverse, covering genres such as black comedy, thriller, erotic drama and experimental film, according to the festival’s artistic director Mihai Chirilov. He said that the films’ “common denominator is family dynamics - and all the crises that come with it.”

Nicolás Rincón Gille’s Tantas almas (The Valley of Souls), Polish director Bartosz Kruhlik’s Supernova, Belgian director Tim Mielants’ tragicomedy Patrick, and Peter Mackie Burns’ drama Rialto compete for the 2020 Transilvania Trophy.

But the list also includes Wildlife, the first feature film of Danish director Jeanette Nordahl; Babyteeth, the debut of Australian Shannon Murphy; Zoé Wittock’s Jumbo; Russian drama Fidelity, directed by Nigina Sayfullaeva; Amir Homayoun Ghanizadeh’s A Hairy Tale (opening photo); Zheng Lu Xinyuan's first feature film The Cloud in Her Room; Zacharias Mavroeidis’ Defunct; and drama Sister directed by Svetla Tsotsorkova.

The 19th edition of TIFF will be organized in Cluj-Napoca between July 31 and August 9. The event will open with the 2019 French romantic comedy-drama La Belle Époque
