Store theft, biggest problem for retailers in Romania, says New Yorker representative

09 November 2010

Store theft is the biggest problem retailer New Yorker has been facing in Romania since opening stores in the country and the phenomenon affects all the companies in the textile industry, said Mihai Şindrilaru, general manager with New Yorker for Romania, quoted by newswire Mediafax.

“We are trying to stop this as much as possible, with different security systems and methods. We are trying to use as many of these, so that we don't get that affected. But the idea is there's a lot of store theft in Romania, and not just in New Yorker stores, but in any stores, including supermarkets,” said Sindrilaru, quoted by Mediafax. Usually, half of the products stolen from stores are recovered and people who steal from stores usually plan to re-sell the products.

New Yorker runs fashion retail 16 stores in Romania and has recently opened one in Unirea Shopping Center downtown Bucharest. A new store will follow at the end of the month in Drobeta Turnu- Severin.  New Yorker saw its sales growing in Romania this year compared to 2009 and hopes for even higher sales in 2011.
