Romanian Railways sends employees in technical unemployment to diminish losses

16 August 2010

Romanian Railways (CFR) Calatori employees will enter a period of 60 days of technical unemployment, a period during which they will receive 75 percent of their basic salary, the company has announced. The measure will be applied to all of CFR Calatori's employees, 15,000 people, including management, who will take turns in staying at home for 60 days until the end of the year. The decision came after CFR posted losses in the first six months of the year, and one of the solutions for recovery is cutting salary costs – which may include some layoffs as well. Up to 4,000 people will lose their jobs with CFR Calatori, while 5,000 will be axed from CFR Marfa (Freight).
