Romanian Iasi Mayor, local police head, detained for corruption
Anticorruption prosecutors detained late last week the Iasi Mayor Gheorghe Nichita and brought him to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) office in Bucharest. The mayor was held in a file on corruption deeds allegedly committed this year.
The prosecutors also detained the local Police head Liviu Hliboceanu and brought him to Bucharest.
Nichita is investigated for abuse of office as he allegedly used local Police employees to supervise certain persons. Hliboceanu was keeping him informed about the pursued persons, reports local Mediafax.
The Police department is subordinated to the City Hall.
The prosecutors raided 21 addresses in Iasi, including the Iasi City Hall, the local police headquarters and the mayor’s house.
