Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu invited to join the American Academy

Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu is one of the 91 directors invited this year to join the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which decides the winners of the famous Oscar prizes.

Mungiu, 48, is one of the best-known Romanian filmmakers. He won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Another one of his movies, Beyond the Hills, won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 2012.

He was selected for the third time in the main competition at this year edition of the Cannes Film Festival with the movie Graduation, which brought him the Best Director award.

Mungiu was also a member of the main competition jury at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
