Health minister: Romania has requested 10 mln COVID-19 vaccine doses from the EU

10 August 2020

Romania has requested 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from the European Union (EU), as the authorities want to make sure that at least half of the country's population would have access to such a vaccine once it becomes available, health minister Nelu Tataru said on Saturday, August 8.

"We requested 10 million (e.n. vaccine doses) […] Let's see how much we will receive from this requested amount," Tataru said, according to Digi24.

People from the most exposed categories, such as those working in the healthcare system, the elderly, and people with previous medical conditions, will be the first to get the vaccine, the health minister also said.

Nelu Tataru announced in mid-June that Romania had joined the European system for the vaccine against COVID-19

About a month ago, the health minister told Digi24 that a COVID-19 vaccine could be made available in the first half of next year and that the European Commission is in contact with the manufacturing companies to ensure stocks for the citizens of the EU states, including Romania. He specified that the EC would try to purchase stocks and then distribute them to the member states.
