Huawei wants more public consultations on 5G regulations in RO

13 August 2020

Chinese group Huawei believes it meets all the requirements listed in the draft regulations for the participation of technology companies in developing the 5G infrastructure in Romania.

The group denies that it is under the control of a foreign government, in the absence of an independent legal system, or that it has problems with shareholder transparency, Hotnews.ro reported.

Still, Huawei fears a strictly political decision, with no evidence of the allegations and no technical assessments.

This would result in EUR 9.2 billion losses for the Romanian economy, Huawei Romania CEO George Zhan estimated.

Furthermore, he recommended the Romanian authorities to insist more on technical details, insufficiently covered by the draft regulations.

He said that Huawei submitted to the Romanian Government its comments to the draft, and asked for 1.5-2 months for more debates on the topic.

"We can meet all the conditions mentioned in the draft law in Article 4, but we recommend legislators to look at the technical aspects, which are not well presented and defined. The authorization procedure is not clearly described, an important shortcoming. We believe Huawei will meet all conditions if they are well defined. We are not only leaders in 5G technology but also one of the most internationally verified companies in terms of cybersecurity, without any back doors discovered in our equipment and solutions. We have a research center in Brussels where our technology can be verified, so we are one of the few companies that can meet the cybersecurity conditions," said the head of Huawei Romania.
