Government could borrow money to develop the Romanian Post

08 March 2016

The state could take a loan from an international financial institution to develop the Romanian Post, said Communication Minister Marius Bostan.

“We are preparing a road map for the next 5-7 years that includes attracting financing on the capital market,” Bostan said, cited by local Agerpres.

The amounts needed to develop the Romanian Post are very high, according to the minister. The Post needs huge investments, and in the current financial situation, the money can only come from loans.

The minister supports the listing of the Romanian Post.

“However, we need to see what the consultants say,” he added.

The Romanian Post is one of the biggest companies in Romania, with over 25,000 employees in 2014. However, its business has been on a downtrend in recent years, due to increased competition from private courier firms. The post’s main advantage is the large territorial network, which reaches even remote villages, but its asset base is outdated.
