EU seeks for easier international divorce

11 April 2010

International marriages could have an easy way out in case of a divorce if European Union states agree on enforcing a legislation allowing couples to choose under which country's law they will separate. The European Commission has proposed a piece of legislation meant to help individuals with different citizenships get an easier divorce, in order to reduce the impact on the couple's children. It would also allow couple to get a divorce in their country of residence, under their home country's laws but without actually going back to that country for the divorce process. There are around 300,000 international marriages each year in the EU. This proposal was supported by Viviane Reading, the EU Commissioner for Justice. For the project to be enforced, EU member states have to vote for it, while the European Parliament also has to cast its supporting vote.
