The European Commission has asked Romania to draft new plans to prevent waste generation and manage waste based on the EU law.

Romania had a waste management plan between 2003 and 2013, but the plan wasn’t revised, extended or replaced, according to the EC.

Romania has also been lagging behind on preventing waste generation. The country should have adopted plans to reduce waste through improved manufacturing techniques and through efforts to stimulate demand for ecological products, with less packaging, since 2013.

“If Romania fails to take action within two months the Commission may refer the matter to EU’s Court of Justice,” according to a EC press release.
