Former Romanian PM Ciolos ready to run in both European and local elections

18 March 2019

Former Romanian prime minister Dacian Ciolos, the leader of newly formed party PLUS, said he is ready to run for the European Parliament this year as well as for the Romanian Parliament in next year's elections, if needed.

He also let the door open for a presidential candidacy as well. He said that his project is in Romania.

Cioloş explained that he is not running for the European Parliament to get a safe seat in Brussels, where he has already spent five years and could have remained, and this candidacy for the European Parliamentary elections is part of the project with which he wants to contribute to Romania.

“And one thing I can assure you, no matter what happens until 2020, I will be a candidate for the Romanian Parliament, because my project is in Romania,” Ciolos said, quoted by News.ro.

As regards the presidential candidate of the USR-PLUS Alliance, he said that a decision will be taken as part of a broader strategy for Romania after the European elections. The decision will have nothing to do with the Alliance’s relationship with other parties or president Klaus Iohannis (expected to run for another term), Ciolos stated.
