RO football club may sue medical services provider for false-positive COVID-19 tests

30 July 2020

Romania's second-biggest private medical services provider Regina Maria started internal evaluations after 23 members of football club CFR Cluj tested positive for COVID-19 to find a week later that they were not infected with the new coronavirus.

Regina Maria also initiated an external audit with Abbott, the American manufacturer of the test processing equipment, to validate the procedures and testing process.

"Verifications so far confirm that the procedures have been followed correctly. In addition, we specify that the RT-PCR technique has an accuracy of 98%, being the standard test for COVID-19 worldwide," Regina Maria explained in a press release.

Meanwhile, Mediafax reported that the football club considers suing the Regina Maria clinic in Bucharest, which issued the false-positive results.

The false-positive tests caused financial and emotional damages to the members of the club, CFR Cluj claims. However, the club’s official press release doesn’t mention suing the medical network.

A match that CFR Cluj was supposed to play over the weekend was postponed and made the team's schedule busier. The players who tested positive were also unable to train.

CFR Cluj is currently second in Liga 1 and still has theoretical chances to win the title.
