The number of cars registered in Romania in August contracted by over 50% year on year, both for the new vehicles and for used cars registered for the first time in the country.

Some 12,900 new vehicles were registered in August, 52.6% fewer than in the same month of 2019, the association of automobile producers and importers APIA announces. Of these, 11,157 were passenger cars, down 51.9%.

By brands, the ranking is led by Dacia, with 3,757 units sold, Volkswagen with 892 units, Renault with 766 units, Skoda with 742 units, and Toyota with 616 units.

In the first eight months, the new car registrations dropped by 37.5% to 73,723 units.

Commercial vehicle registrations reached 1,743 units in August, a decrease of 57%. In the first eight months, the decrease in this segment was 39.1%.

Motorcycle registrations, however, increased by 45.4% in August, to 535 units.
