Bucharest’s Christmas lights, more expensive than Vienna’s

14 December 2015

Bucharest’s Christmas lights cost about EUR 2.3 million this year. Luxten, the company that manages the public lighting system in the capital, pays EUR 1.7 million of the amount, whereas the City Hall pays for the rest.

The City Hall is paying only for installing the Christmas decorations and connecting them to the public lighting system, whereas Luxten provides them for free.

By comparison, Vienna’s Christmas lights, which are among the most beautiful in Europe, cost about EUR 1.5 million, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The price paid for Christmas lights in Bucharest is high when compared to other investments. In 2014, the Bucharest City Hall modernized the public lighting system on the Iuliu Maniu Boulevard, one of the longest roads in Bucharest, for EUR 1.5 million, namely less than the price paid for the Christmas lights. The network was over 40-year old.
