Update: Bucharest public transport shuts down for June 1st strike

25 May 2010

The Bucharest metro and the public transport in Bucharest will not be functional for most of the day on June 1st, as the employees working for the two public transport companies have announced a general strike for the day. Moreover, Metrorex is analyzing the possibility of starting a strike during an undetermined period of time, starting May 31st, if their salaries will be cut by 25 percent.

State-owned Romanian Railways company (CFR) and airline carrier Tarom have also announced they will join the May 31st strike. This would paralyze the entire public transport system in Romania. The only options left are the private transport carriers, such as buses serving different areas of the country.

A final decision on the length of the strike will be taken this Thursday.

UPDATE: The workers unions from RATB and Metrorex will announced on Friday if and when they will organize a general strike.
