25 May 2018

The producer of the Ibanesti Cheese (Telemeaua de Ibanesti), the first Romanian product with a protected designation of origin (PDO) in the EU, plans to double its production next year to meet the higher demand.

The company will invest EUR 5 million in increasing its production capacity, allowing it to process 120,000 liters of milk per day, up from 60,000 liters currently, local Mediafax reported. The investment will be financed with EU funds.

The Ibanesti Chese is produced from milk from the Gurghiu Mountains area and has a higher calcium and magnesium content. The cheese is also preserved with salt water from a special spring, which makes it unique in Romania and EU.

The company that produces this cheese is a family business owned by the Todoran family.
