Correction: The holes in Romania’s roads equal a third of Bucharest’s Herastrau Park

17 April 2018

The correct news is: The total surface of potholes in Romania's national roads and highways is 619,000 sqm, namely almost 62 hectares, according to official data from the National Road Infrastructure Management Company – CNAIR. This is the equivalent of a third of the area of Herastrau Park, the largest in Bucharest, which is 187 hectares, or about 100 football pitches (some 7,000 sqm each).

Should these potholes be placed on a single road, 10 meters wide, this road would be 62 kilometers long, which is the distance between Bucharest and Ploiesti.

The initial news was: The total surface of the potholes in Romania’s roads is over 80 square kilometers, according to local news agency Mediafax, which quoted an official of the National Road Infrastructure Management Company – CNAIR. This is the equivalent of more than a third of Bucharest’s area, which is 228 square kilometers and almost equal to the surface of Iasi, the biggest city in Eastern Romania, which is 94 square kilometers.

CNAIR announced that it kicked off a road revamping program aimed at fixing the potholes, which will take place from April to June. Some 619,000 sqm of potholes are included in this program, 21,195 sqm of which have been already covered.

The company has a budget of RON 120 million (EUR 25.7 million) for fixing potholes this year.
