Romania's Govt. retroactively grants subsidy for people working far from home

26 May 2017

Unemployed people who have found a job located more than 50 kilometers away from home in the last months will be able to get a resettlement bonus to cover up to 75% of their rent, but no more than RON 900 (EUR 198) per month via the "First Rent" program.

This support scheme was approved by the Government in January, but could not be applied in the absence of implementing rules. The Government has decided to implement it retroactively.

Labor minister Lia Olguta Vasilescu said yesterday that the subsidy will also be granted to people who have found a job far from home since the adoption of the program until now.

“This ordinance was approved in January. Today we’ve come up with the methodological norms and the good news is that those who have found a job after the ordinance was issued can benefit from these amounts of money,” the minister said.

The subsidy will cover 75% of the living expenses in the new home or new residence, but will not exceed RON 900. It will be granted for 36 months to people whose monthly net revenues don’t exceed RON 5,000 (EUR 1,100) per month as a single person or together with the family.

Only people who work for at least one year will get the subsidy.
