Former Romanian Finance Minister could become EIB vice-president

04 September 2015

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has nominated his former Finance Minister Ioana Petrescu to replace Mihai Tanasescu as vice president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) for one year until Romania’s term ends.

This is a position of external representation, which Romania has received following political negotiations at EU level. The information was confirmed by sources on the financial market, reports local Ziarul Financiar.

Romania is under pressure to withdraw Mihai Tanasescu, after his name was included in the Microsoft case on the acquisition of IT licenses by the Romanian state at unjustified prices, in which he is accused of receiving a USD 90,000 bribe back when he was Finance Minister.

The salary for the vice president position at the EIB amounts to EUR 35,000 per month. The European Investment Bank is one of the largest European banks, whose shareholders are the European countries. The EIB is also one of the largest investors in Romania.
