Over two million foreign tourists spent RON 4.67 billion (EUR 1 billion) in Romania in the first nine months of this year. Most of them came to Romania for business and conferences during this period, according to data the National Statistics Institute (INS) published on Friday, December 15.

Foreign tourists spent on average RON 2,159 (EUR 466) per person in the first nine months of this year.

More than half (58.3%) of these tourists came for business-related reasons, conferences, fairs or exhibitions. Their expenses accounted for 60.4% of the total.

The remaining 41.7% came for personal reasons, including holidays, medical treatments, visiting friends, religion or transit. Of these, the largest share (64.5%) came to Romania on holidays.

Accommodation costs represented over half of the total expenses, namely some EUR 500 million. Almost half of all foreign tourists came via tourism agencies whereas a third organized their trips by themselves.
