The number of newly established firms with foreign capital increased by 8.5% in the first five months of this year in Romania compared to the same period last year, reaching 2,406, according to the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).

These new companies had a share capital of over USD 16.7 million, up 8.7% year-on-year.

Some 581 new companies with foreign capital were registered in May, up 4.6% year-on-year.

In 2016, Romania recorded the weakest year in the last 18 years in terms of fresh foreign capital companies. Over 5,340 such companies were set up last year, compared to over 5,800 in 2015.

After 1991, the record came in 2007, with over 15,000 such companies. At the opposite pole, the lowest number of new companies with foreign capital was in 1995 - 3,400.

Between 1991 and 2016, Romania registered over 209,800 companies owned by foreigners. Their share capital reached EUR 44.8 billion.
