Employment rate in Romania goes up in 2017
The employment rate for the working age population (15-64 years) in Romania reached 63.9% in 2017, up by 2.3 percentage points versus 2016, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The employment rate was higher for men (71.8%) than for women (55.8%). It was also higher in urban areas (64.8%) than rural areas (62.7%).
In 2017, Romania’s economically active population was 9.12 million people, of which 8.67 million were employed and 449,000 were unemployed.
Employees represented almost three quarters (73.7%) of employment while self-employed and contributing family workers represented 25.3% of the total employment. Of the total number of employed persons, 22.8% worked in agriculture, 30.1% worked in industry and constructions and 47.1% in services. Some 682,000 people, representing 7.9% of the employed population, worked part-time, especially in agriculture.
The unemployment rate was 4.9% in 2017, down from 5.9% in 2016.
