Contradictory information about minimum wage hike in Romania

11 July 2017

Social-democratic (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea said yesterday that the gross minimum wage will grow to RON 1,550 (EUR 340) in 2018, although the new governing program provides that the gross minimum wage will reach RON 2,000 (EUR 437) next year.

Despite being mentioned in the document, Dragnea said that the amount of RON 2,000 was “misplaced in the public space," reports local News.ro. He added that the minimum salary will further increase to RON 1,650 and 1,750, in 2019 and 2020.

The new Government, which was recently installed after the former Grindeanu Government lost the support of the governing coalition, came up with a new governing program. This included provisions about the gross minimum wage, which was expected to grow to RON 2,000 in 2018, RON 2,640 in 2019, and RON 3,000 in 2020. However, the figures presented yesterday by the PSD leader Liviu Dragnea correspond to the former governing program, applied by the Grindeanu Government.

The current gross minimum wage amounts to RON 1,450 in Romania.
