Children from the city of Arad in Western Romania can learn Chinese thanks to a partnership between a local shopping mall and a non-governmental organization.
The Summer School at the Galleria Arad mall takes place every weekday between 9 and 15 and includes activities like reading tales, mathematics, arts, karate, games, English lessons and now Chinese.
There are three age groups (5-6, 7-8 and 9-10 years old) and the language lessons will be taught until mid-August by a Chinese teacher. Organizers say they want to offer kids “new horizons of knowledge” and “given the trends in the economy, learning Chinese language is an advantage”.
The private initiative was successful since all the places are occupied. There is even a waiting list for those interested in participating to the program.
Since March, the Arad branch of the Romanian Chinese Friendship House organizes free Chinese language lessons for students and adults, which are also popular.
The official inauguration of the local office of the NGO was held last week, in collaboration with the Aurel Vlaicu State University.
