Banks will no longer be able to apply fees for checking one’s bank account statement, according to an amendment to a draft law that aims to increase consumer protection when choosing a payment account.

The Government adopted this draft law in May, and it has recently reached the Parliament, reports local Profit.ro.

The bill transposes into national law the European directive on the transparency and compatibility of consumer fees charged for payment accounts. It should have been done by September last year. The European Commission recently reminded the Romanian Government about it and the potential infringement procedure should the country fail to implement it.

The draft law includes the obligation to establish a list of the most representative services related to a payment account. The list will include at least 10 and at most 20 of the most representative services subject to a fee.

An amendment prohibits applying any fee for the interrogation of the accounts.
