BRUA gas pipeline to stop in Hungary

24 July 2017

Hungary announced on Friday that the gas pipeline that should connect Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria (BRUA), will stop in Hungary and will not reach Austria anymore, according to icis.com.

Representatives of the Romanian gas transporter Transgaz said that they knew about Hungary’s intention, according to Hotnews.ro.

Last week, Transgaz (Romania), Bulgartransgaz (Bulgaria), DESFA (Greece), FGSZ (Hungary) and ICGB, the company responsible for the development, construction and operation of the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector, signed a memorandum in Bucharest to unite their gas networks to increase the supply security in South-Eastern Europe.

The BRUA pipeline is essential for future Black Sea gas exploitations, where Exxon, OMV and other companies have found huge gas reserves.

The Russian giant Gazprom has recently signed an agreement with the Hungarian firm Hungarian Gas Trade Ltd for long-term cooperation to supply gas to Hungary.
