Residents of central Romania city protest for local airport construction

25 September 2017

Around 200 people protested in Brasov, a city in central Romania, this weekend to demand that the construction of the local airport continue, News.ro reported.

The protesters gathered in front of the Brasov Prefecture and carried posters saying “Brasov Airport 2025?” and “The Government is burying the airport. Only 20% of the needed money allotted to Brasov.”

The Ghimbav International Airport in Brasov currently has only the runway, which cannot be used without the other movement surfaces that need to be built. A sewage system is also missing. The money for the rest of the work could not be gathered in the past three years. The Brasov County Council funded the construction of the runway with RON 17 million (EUR 3.7 million).

A total of EUR 57.5 million would be needed to build a 3,600 sqm passenger terminal, a control tower, a parking lot of 163 places, and the remaining parts of the project, according to a feasibility study.

In February of this year, the Brasov County Council opened the bid for the building of the driveways, of the boarding and landing platform, and for the expansion of the sewage systems. The County Council allotted EUR 10 million in 2017 for the works at the airport.
