Nicolae Grigorescu was the best-selling artist at art auctions in Romania in 2018, with 20 works awarded for a total amount of EUR 1.09 million.

Among the top ten best-selling artists were also Nicolae Tonitza, Stefan Luchian and Theodor Pallady, according to the index published by tudor-art.com, quoted by Profit.ro.

The only contemporary painter among the top ten artists is Adrian Ghenie (three paintings from his early periods sold out of three put up for sale for at a total price of EUR 145,000).

A total of 23 works of Grigorescu were auctioned in 2018, and three of them remained unsold, according to News.ro. Grigorescu’s “Peasant wearing white handkercher“ (“Tarancuta cu basma alba”) was awarded for EUR 340,000 in the "Autumn Auction" organized by Artmark, a record for the local market.

A total of 27 works by Nicolae Tonitza were sold last year out of a total of 36 put up for for sale. The total price was EUR 655,569 . At Artmark, the painting “Tatar woman on sea” ("Tataroaica pe mare") was sold for the sum of EUR 210,000 in the winter sales session.

Eleven of the 18 works signed by Stefan Luchian auctioned were sold for EUR 520,139 euros, with the "Jugs and Pitchers" (“Galbenele si ulcior”) sold in Artmark's "Summer Auction" for EUR  130,000.
