Israeli PM postpones visit to Romania

03 July 2018

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed his official visit to Romania due to other engagements, according to Israel’s Embassy in Bucharest, local Mediafax reported.

The visit was scheduled to take place in August, when a joint meeting of the Romanian and Israeli Governments was also supposed to take place.

The visit was agreed in April this year, when Romanian PM Viorica Dancila went to Israel (opening photo) together with Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea. They made this visit shortly after Dragnea announced that Romania would follow the US example and move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The Government then said it would analyze the effects of such a move.

After the visit in Israel, liberal leader Ludovic Orban filed a criminal complaint accusing Dancila of high treason. The prosecutors announced at the end of last week that they would start an investigation of the facts.

President Klaus Iohannis said on several occasions that a decision on moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would cancel any chance that Romania is voted as a non-permanent member in the UN’s Security Council.
