Jethro Shirley-Smith grew up in London, but he was born in Bucharest, and has been coming to Romania every year since – as a child and now with his wife and three young children; keeping up strong relationships with his family in Bucharest is a priority, as is maintaining his love for Romania, especially traditional life in the countryside. He studied at the University of Exeter, where he gained a BA in Sociology and an MA in European Identity, and started a PhD at the Institute of Education, University of London, which he had to leave for personal reasons. He has worked as a teacher and in various other roles within education across London and South-West England. He is passionate about travelling, writing and social observation, and he tries to bring all three together as often as he can. Studying how people work together in their environment, and how the environment impacts on people’s behaviour fascinates him; and weaving these aspects together in his writing is something he always strives to achieve.
