The National History and Archaeology Museum and an ancient tomb in Constanţa, a city at the Romanian seaside, will undergo restoration works amounting to almost EUR 6 million. The funding will come from the Operational Regional Program 2014-2020.

The project concerning the History Museum amounts to EUR 4.3 million, while that of the Hypogeu painted tomb to EUR 1.4 million, according to Marius Horia Ţuţuianu, the president of the Constanţa County Council.

The restoration of the museum entails consolidation, protection and preservation works; interior and exterior repairing works; architecture, structural intervention and plumbing works; upgrades to allow the exhibition and protection of the cultural patrimony; and marketing and promotional activities. The building hosting the museum was designed by Romanian architect Victor Stefanescu. It was built between 1912 and 1921 in the neo-Romanian style.

The project of the Hypogeu tomb entails the reconstruction of the mural painting inside the tomb, the reconstruction of the tomb’s architecture and the building of an annex to serve as an info point. The tomb was built in the first part of the 4th century AD and was used until the beginning of the 5th century. It was discovered in 1988.

The museum restoration project is expected to last almost two years, while that of the tomb 34 months.

The president of the Constanţa County Council explained that another contract is to be signed soon for the restoration of the Carsium Fort, while that for the restoration of the Roman Edifice with a Mosaic, located in Constanţa, was already signed.
