Wizz Air opens new base in Romania's Sibiu, launches international flights from Suceava

06 April 2016

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air will begin base operations in Romania’s Sibiu, in August, and will also launch four new international routes from the Sibiu International Airport and one from Suceava. The new base in Sibiu, which is the company’s seventh in Romania, requires an investment of EUR 100 million, which represents the cost of the aircraft to be stationed here, according to the company.

Moreover, Wizz Air will hire 36 people from the region as crewmembers for the new Airbus A320 aircraft, bringing the company’s total employment in Romania to 600 people.

The airline will launch four new routes from Sibiu to Nuremberg (starting August 19), Munich Memmingen (August 21), Milan Bergamo (August 20), and Madrid (August 20). It will also increase the number of flights to London Luton to five per week.

The company has also added Suceava as its newest Romanian destination, launching the new flight to London Luton on August 19. Suceava, a city in north-eastern Romania, recently reopened its airport after revamping work.

Seats on the new routes from Sibiu and Suceava are already on sale on the airline’s website.

Wizz Air carried more than 4.5 million passengers from and to Romanian airports in 2015, up from 3.9 million the year before.

The airline currently offers 114 routes from Romanian airports to 16 countries. To date, Wizz Air has 19 aircraft based in Romania, an investment of nearly EUR 2 billion.
