Walloon PM wants Romania, Poland out of the EU

07 February 2017

The head of the Regional Walloon Government, Paul Magnette, thinks that some countries in Central and Eastern Europe, namely Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria should exit the European Union, according to an interview he gave to French publication L’Echo.

Magnette said that it would be "desirable" to have “a Polxit, a Ungrexit, a Rumaxit, and a Bulgxit" which follows the British exit from the EU (Brexit).

Paul Magnette, the Socialist Prime Minister of Wallonia, became known after his fierce opposition to the Free Trade Treaty of the EU - Canada (CETA). The treaty was finally signed after the region called for a renegotiation.

Magnette is the mayor of Charleroi and a rising personality of the francophone Socialist Party (PS), considered a possible successor to the party’s president Elio Di Rupo.
