Around 600 members of the 1989 Revolutionaries Union have held a protest over the cancellation of payments granted by the state to people who took part in the Romanian uprising. The demonstration blocked traffic temporarily on Iancu de Hunedoara boulevard in Bucharest, as the protestors converged on the offices of the State Secretariat for Revolutionaries to voice their grievances.
Clearance was given for 150 people to hold a protest between 10:00 and 16:00, but in the end around 600 demonstrators joined in, causing problems for traffic. The local police have diverted traffic on the boulevard to alternative routes.
The protestors say the cessation of stipends paid by the government to people who participated in Romania’s 1989 revolution, which overthrew the Nicolae Ceausescu and ended communism in the country, has left many revolutionaries without the means to live.
