Two banks win contract for contactless payments at the Bucharest metro

21 April 2016

Local banks BCR and Banca Transilvania will supply contactless payment services to Bucharest’s subway operator Metrorex in the next four years.

The two banks will get some RON 1.7 million (EUR 380,000), VAT not included, for the service, reports local Profit.ro.

Their services will allow subway travelers to pay for access to the subway directly at POS machines installed at the turnstiles. The travelers will also be able to use their cards to purchase subway tickets from the cashiers or from automated vending machines installed in subway stations.

BCR and Banca Transilvania only provide the payment processing services. Metrorex still needs to purchase and install the POS machines in the subway stations.

The company plans to modernize the access system to the subway and has allotted a EUR 42 million contract to an association made of TIAB, UTI Grup, and Logic IT Consult.

The Bucharest subway transports between 600,000 and 700,000 passengers each day.
