Romania sees thousands of new and relapse TB cases

Romania had over 14,000 notifications of new and relapse tuberculosis cases in 2015, according to the most recent available data in the Global Tuberculosis Report 2016 by the World Health Organization. Overall, the country reported 15,195 tuberculosis cases in 2015, compared to 15,906 cases in 2014, according to the 2015 edition of the same report.

Of the new and relapse cases in 2015, 75% were reported in patients with a known HIV status, 83% were pulmonary ones and 81% were bacteriologically confirmed among pulmonary cases.

The mortality rate of the disease, excluding HIV and TB patients, was of 5.5%, while the same rate among HIV and TB patients stood at 0.32% per a population of 100,000.

The mean age of new native TB cases in the country was of 42.8 years, while the mean age of new foreign TB cases was of 33.0 years, according to statistics by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control/WHO Regional Office for Europe, gathered in the Tuberculosis surveillance and monitoring in Europe 2017 report.
